Hunting for black grouse begins in 2 august. At that time broods stay in the thick grass and berry bushes, on cleared spaces and forest glades, on young growth larch borders, stream banks of the forest, near the places where they are brooded.

Black grouse fly well, noisily flapping their wings, and run quickly. By August, most of the heath-cock finish moulting and are not so helpless, as in the first period of moult.

There are three main methods of hunting exist. From shelter of branches, «approaching» and “driving up”.
